As the second-largest city in Croatia, there is no wonder Split is considered the capital of the Dalmatia region. The historic town is best known as the location of the iconic UNESCO World Heritage site of Diocletian’s Palace. The Palace is one of the finest and most well preserved palatial structures in the world. It is also Split’s number one tourist attraction! The magnificent and sprawling white stone Diocletian’s Palace was built as a retirement home for the Roman Emperor in the 4th century. Today it houses a cathedral, Gothic and Renaissance palaces, churches, and 200 buildings that include shops, cafes, and restaurants.
